2020-11-12 · Pronator Teres Syndrome describes the constellation of signs and symptoms resulting from compression of the median nerve by the pronator teres muscle near the elbow. It is the second most frequent cause of median nerve compression with features similar to but discernible from its more common distal counterpart, carpal tunnel syndrome.
The entity has been referred to as pronator syndrome or anterior interosseous nerve syndrome. Pain and tenderness in the forearm are frequent symptoms.
The two syndromes are therefore often confused. In addition, the two syndromes may occur simultaneously, meaning that the median nerve is compressed in two places at the same time, i.e. a “double crush”. Symptoms of pronator syndrome can mimic those of carpal tunnel syndrome with some important points of differentiation. Both conditions may be exacerbated by repetitive activity. Patient do not complain of night pain, which distinguishes this condition from carpal tunnel (10, 11,12).
If this nerve gets damaged or trapped, it can lead to pain and chronic discomfort. Milder symptoms include tingling in the hands and forearms. Abstract. We present the case of a patient with severe symptoms of proximal forearm median nerve neuropathy. Over the course of 5 years his condition progressed to encompass rare features of combined pronator teres syndrome (PTS) and anterior interosseous nerve syndrome (AINS).
Pronator teres syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which passes between two parts of the pronator teres muscle in the arm, gets trapped.
carpal tunnel syndrome fails to respond to conservative or surgical intervention. Differential diagnosis is based largely on the symptoms, patterns of paresthesia, and specific patterns of muscle weakness. Due to the relative rarity of pronator syndrome and anterior interosseous nerve
