Shepitko made Wings (her first film) upon her graduation from film school and died tragically in a car crash at age forty, having only completed four outstanding films. She showed tremendous promise, as did several of her film-school comrades (Tarkovsky and KIimov, to name a few); so it is all the more unfortunate that only a few films remain to remember her. This set gives us two very good films indeed: 'Wings' is one of her earliest while 'The Ascent' was to be her last. Wings (Krylya, 1966), included in this set, was the first of Shepitko's films to explicitly consider the Great Patriotic War, albeit indirectly.

She happens to be sitting by an exhibit celebrating Russian pilots from WWII, including the Women's Air Corps, of which she was a member.

In this episode, I seek to change that. I talk about two of her greatest films: "Wings" (1966) and "The Ascent" (1977). Shepitko died early in 1979 in a car accident at the age of 41.
